David Powlison, a renowned expert on restoring joy to the sexually broken, joins for a candid discussion about the complexities of pornography. They unpack its cultural representations and moral implications, emphasizing the biblical lens on sin and sexuality. Practical strategies to combat temptation and foster accountability are highlighted, along with the crucial role of gratitude in shifting desires towards God's gifts. They also address the misconception that pornography affects only men, advocating for inclusive support within the church.
Pornography not only objectifies individuals but also leads to spiritual consequences that grieve the Spirit and distort God’s gift of sexuality.
Effective strategies to combat pornography require both restricting access through technology and fostering healthy relationships to cultivate a desire for holiness.
Deep dives
Understanding Pornography
Pornography is defined as depictions of sexual subjects consumed for arousal, escape, entertainment, or affirmation, and it includes not just images or videos, but also literature. This broad definition acknowledges the historical context in which women often engage with pornography, particularly through romance novels. The problem with pornography lies not only in its consumption but in the deeper moral issues it raises, as it leads to seeing others as objects rather than individuals created in God's image. This perspective grieves the Spirit and fosters a sinful desire for what is evil, indicating that engaging with pornography poses great spiritual consequences.
Biblical Teachings on Sexual Sin
Scriptural references, particularly from the teachings of Jesus, emphasize that sexual sin extends beyond physical actions to the thoughts and desires of the heart. Matthew 5:27-30 reinforces this point by teaching that lustful intent is equivalent to adultery in one’s heart, highlighting the internal struggle against sexual temptation. The conversation underscores the importance of recognizing that God created human sexuality as a good gift meant to be experienced within the context of marriage, but this gift can be easily distorted through sinful behaviors such as pornography use. The focus should be on understanding that God desires not only holiness but also a deep appreciation for the beauty of His gifts.
Addressing the Cycle of Enticement and Addiction
The conversation identifies various stages of engagement with pornography, from initial enticement to being ensnared and ultimately becoming addicted. Recognizing these stages helps individuals understand the pervasive effects of pornography and its capacity to dominate one's life, leading to feelings of entrapment. The cultural normalization of pornography contributes to individuals underestimating its impact, as many may regard it as a harmless escape rather than a significant moral failing. Addressing this issue requires a balanced approach, wherein both access to pornographic material and the heart's condition are examined.
Combatting Pornography: Practical Strategies
Effective strategies to combat pornography involve both restricting access and addressing the underlying desires that fuel the addiction. Modern technology has made pornography easily accessible, necessitating proactive measures such as accountability mechanisms, parental controls, and honest conversations about triggers and environments that promote temptation. The discussion emphasizes radical changes—much like a medical treatment for serious conditions—such as removing certain apps or limiting internet access, creating barriers to ease the temptation. Yet, it is equally vital to cultivate a positive appetite for holiness and healthy relationships, as shifting focus towards fulfilling and divine relationships can ultimately help in resisting the pull of illicit material.
In this episode of Counseling Talk, Deepak Reju, Hayley Satrom, and Garrett Kell start a mini-series on pornography and how pastors and members can help one another fight the battle.
Strategies for Closing Off Access Points Here are some practical steps to consider as you help an addict to get rid of his access points. 1. Ask the struggler about every e-device he owns. 2. Encourage him or her to get a software monitoring program, such as Covenant Eyes, and put it on all his devices. 3. Get rid of standard web browsers and rely on a browser that is carefully monitored. 4. Get rid of the applications store. If a new app needs to be downloaded onto a tablet or phone, provide access only temporarily. 5. Use special restrictions to cut out the web browser and app store, set time limits, and so on. Make sure the restrictions code is known only to an accountability partner. If the struggler knows it, he or she will remove the restrictions in a moment of weakness and act out. 6. Get rid of all apps that have an embedded browser.
What’s the principle behind these six points? We’re removing control from the believer who struggles with porn and giving it to others because he or she can’t steward the freedom of open access.
