One Reward System
- There's only one reward system in the brain, responsible for both pleasure and contentment.
- It's essential for survival but easily manipulated, leading to addiction.
Seven Differences
- Pleasure and happiness differ in seven key ways: duration, location, action, social context, substance use, addiction potential, and neurotransmitters.
- Pleasure is short-term, visceral, taken, solitary, substance-related, addictive, and driven by dopamine; happiness is the opposite.
Dopamine vs. Serotonin
- Dopamine, the pleasure neurotransmitter, is excitatory, leading to tolerance and addiction through receptor downregulation.
- Serotonin, tied to happiness, is inhibitory and isn't downregulated by itself, only by dopamine.
