Rett Larson is the head strength and conditioning coach for the German Women’s National Volleyball team.

Prior to time with Germany, he was also the head S&C coach for the Netherlands, and the Chinese Women’s Volleyball team, where he won a gold medal.

In this amazing episode, Rett and I start by touching on how he originally got into physical preparation, and the wide ranging journey he’s been on.

From there, we dive into topics like creating more dynamic and engaging warm-ups, how to improve ankle durability, why deceleration is so important in sports, and the value of straight-arm strength in your programs.

Not only was this a fun episode to record, but I guarantee you’re going to have some “ah-ha” moments along the way.

Let’s do this!

A good warm-up needs to be solving a problem…it needs to have a very specific goal. – Rett Larson

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

  • How four years of grinding in law firms ultimately pushed Rett towards strength and conditioning.
  • Why he traded the comfort and allure of Southern California for a life-changing experience in China.
  • How Rett originally got interested in warm-ups, and why they’ve become a bridge-building tool for him.
  • The boxes he tries to check in his warm-ups, and why they don’t necessarily include a foam roller or specific stretches.
  • Barefoot Magic: What it is, and how you can incorporate it into your workouts.
  • The role deceleration training plays in his program, and both the conventional and unique ways he trains it.
  • Rett’s thoughts on one of the biggest mistakes many people make in their power training.
  • Why straight-arm strength is such an untapped area of performance improvement and injury-proofing.
  • A really fun lightning round where we talk about jump training tips, curating creativity, and what Rett means when he talks about “No Zombies.”
