Decolonizing our Herbal Roots, with Mimi Hernandez | Tea Talks with Jiling

Savor this mouthwatering and plant-connected conversation with one of the leaders of our herbal community, Mimi Hernandez, Executive Director of the American Herbalists Guild, and homesteader near Asheville, NC. Mimi shares colorful tales of rolling up invasive honeysuckle and planting native seeds across three acres of land, power-washing five gallon bucketfuls of tunas (prickly pear fruit) to make hot-pink prickly pear cakes, writing an herbal for National Geographic, making herbal rum infusions like her Mexican grandmother, and balancing paperwork-ridden leadership with unadulterated time with her family, plants, and chickens. 

Mimi has dedicated her life to advocating for both traditional and professional herbal pathways while building cultural bridges of understanding. Inspired by her Mexican-Colombian background and the Abuelas in her life, her roots spring from Latinx folk herbal traditions. Mimi has mentored many students of clinical and community herbalism over the years. Enjoy learning more about her adventures from grandma’s kitchen into academia, and eventually back into the kitchen again.
