129: The Brain's Pharmacist. Learning how to Fight Infections and Fuel the Brain Through Supplementation | Dr. James DiNicolantonio, PharmD

My guest is Dr. James DiNicolantonio who is a cardiovascular research scientist and Doctor of Pharmacy at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City, Missouri. He is the author of The Salt Fix, Superfuel and his latest book ’The Immunity Fix’. 

James is  a well-respected and internationally known scientist and expert on health and nutrition, he has contributed extensively to health policy and has even testified in front of the Canadian Senate regarding the harms of added sugars. 

We start the episode off by talking about the journey of becoming a PharmD and the numerous published articles that James has researched and written. 

At the beginning of the episode we also begin to discuss:

1.Immunology 101—The innate and adaptive immune system.

2. Antibodies, B cells—How they fight viruses, create antibodies and T cells—Role in the adaptive immune system and ability to kill infected cells to prevent viral spread. 

In the middle of the episode we do spend a majority of the time talking about: 

1. Latest research and findings on COVID-19 and it’s correlation to metabolic dysfunction, comorbidities and   risk factors associated with worse COVID19 outcomes. 

Towards the end: 

1. Supplementation, nutrition and lifestyle interventions that help boost the immune system in an effort to fight off infections.
