Deep dives
Forming Hope in the Midst of Suffering
Hope is a practice that is shaped through embodied experiences in community. It is not a magical or isolated state of mind, but a neural shared pathway. By engaging with a community that offers safety, security, and acceptance, individuals can cultivate hope by paying attention to the glory that is present in the midst of their pain. This practice involves encoding positive memories into their neural networks, which then shapes their anticipated future. Hope is a constant formation process that requires intentional practice and submission to the work of the Holy Spirit, the texts, and the community.
The Relationship Between Hope, Love, and Pain
Hope and love are deeply interconnected, and they are both necessary for human flourishing. Love initiates the formation of hope, as individuals experience the presence and acceptance of others in community. Pain, on the other hand, is a perception of noxious stimuli, while suffering involves the anticipation of pain as unending, often due to a broken sense of time and narrative. Hope allows individuals to imagine a different outcome, to see glory within their brokenness, and to shape neural pathways that enable them to receive pain in a different way. Hope is a deliberate practice that requires vulnerability and risk-taking, as individuals learn to trust in the goodness of God and the support of a loving community.
The Importance of Forming Hope in a Divided Culture
In a culture characterized by skepticism and division, the practice of hope is essential for personal and communal transformation. Hope challenges the critical mindset that separates individuals and inhibits trust. Through intentional engagement with a community committed to shaping hope, individuals can disrupt the isolation, shame, and distraction fostered by the larger culture. Hope is an embodied reality formed through shared experiences, attention to glory, and the trust-building presence of the Holy Spirit. By actively participating in the formation of hope, individuals can counteract the culture's tendency to divide and conquer, and instead cultivate resilience, restoration, and healing.
We’re back with Curt Thompson, MD, to talk about hope.
Have you ever wondered how to summon hope when everything seems bleak? Is hope a fleeting notion or something we can truly cultivate? Hope, like faith and love, is not just an abstraction, but a skill we can nurture. It's a profound practice that finds its home in both our minds and bodies. Curt shares: “The things that I pay attention to on purpose, I remember. And what I remember becomes my anticipated future. Hope is a function of the mind that addresses the future. And this is what I mean when I say hope is a thing that I form by paying attention to the glory that is offered to me in the middle of my pain, in the present moment. And it requires lots and lots of practice, but it then is not like, ‘Oh, maybe I'll have hope. I hope I have hope.’ It's a thing that I maybe I won't like. And so… I'm going to have to practice.”
We thrive on shared experiences of hope within a community. Even a brief 3-minute interaction can spark the daring prospect of relying on another person. Our communal practice etches hope into our brain's pathways, grounding it in the way we engage with one another. Although personal introspection has its place, the true growth of hope blossoms within the context of human connection.
