Reflections on the ADHD Conference
The 2024 International Conference on ADHD provided valuable insights for participants, including adults with ADHD, educators, and clinicians. The conference atmosphere facilitated open discussions, allowing attendees to connect easily thanks to their shared experiences with ADHD. Participants were encouraged to pace themselves during the hectic schedule filled with various presentations and workshops, recognizing that it's perfectly fine to miss some events. This reflection highlights the need to balance social connections with personal well-being amidst the bustle of the conference.
Key Presentations and Learnings
Attendees benefited from a range of informative presentations, such as Dr. Carolyn Parcells' talk on ADHD medication management, which offered essential details about treatment options and the importance of monitoring efficacy. Another significant presentation by Dr. Abraham Oren focused on a new function-based method for diagnosing ADHD, emphasizing assessments based on critical brain functions rather than disruptive behaviors. These sessions encouraged listeners to reevaluate how ADHD is diagnosed and treated, fostering a deeper understanding of the condition from a personal rather than solely clinical perspective. The thoughtful discussions sparked by these presentations illuminated pathways for future exploration and learning.
Innovative Accommodations at Disneyland
The podcast also explored how Disneyland provides disability access services, which assist guests facing challenges like those posed by ADHD. While the service allows users to reserve times for rides to minimize waiting in line, it still requires engaging in the waiting process, albeit in a more manageable way. This approach showcases a thoughtful accommodation that helps individuals explore the park without the distress of long queues, increasing accessibility for those affected. The effectiveness of these accommodations offers a valuable model for considering how various environments can better serve individuals requiring additional support.
Feels like it’s been a while for me but hopefully I was able to prepare enough material ahead of time so that you didn’t have to notice. And the reason it’s been a bit for me is because of the 2024 International Conference on ADHD which is a collaborative event put on my CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder), ADDA (Attention Deficit Disorder Association), and ACO (ADHD Coaches Organization).
The conference caters to adults with ADHD, educators, coaches, organizers, clinicians, therapists - really anyone who is effect by ADHD either directly on indirectly. There are all kinds of presentations at the conference - workshops, peer-to-peer discussion groups, networking opportunities, and there’s also an exhibit hall.
And this year was my first year presenting at the conference.
So in this episode I’m going to go into some of my reflections of attending this years conference - things I did, things I learned and of course some stuff about my presentation.
