Deep dives
Changing Fertility Rates in India
India's total fertility rate (TFR) has dramatically declined to two, indicating significant demographic changes in the country. This decline is a result of improvements in wealth, education, and healthcare access, leading families to choose smaller family sizes. However, regional disparities remain, with states like Bihar reporting a fertility rate of three compared to urban areas in West Bengal, where it's as low as 1.39. This shift raises critical questions about the future workforce, especially as the richer southern and western regions age, creating a need for discussions around internal migration to address labor shortages.
Impact of Vaccines on Child Mortality
Childhood vaccines have saved approximately 150 million lives over the past 50 years, highlighting their vital role in global health. Research suggests that every minute, around six children are saved due to the impact of vaccinations, particularly against measles, which has prevented an estimated 94 million deaths. While factors like improved nutrition and sanitation also contribute to declines in infant mortality, vaccines are credited with about 40% of this reduction. The increase in measles vaccine coverage from less than 20% in 2000 to over 70% is a notable success story in this context.
It’s that time of year again, the time when we ask some of our favourite statistically-inclined people for their numbers of the year.
We present them to you - from falling birth rates in India to children saved by vaccines.
