Deep dives
Betrayal by Judas
Judas betrays Jesus with a kiss, a symbol of ultimate reconciliation, which adds to the depth of betrayal Jesus experiences. This highlights the use of counterfeits by evil forces, emphasizing the need for discernment and the guidance of the Holy Spirit to distinguish truth from falsehood.
The Crucifixion
Jesus endures the excruciating physical torment of crucifixion, a slow and agonizing form of execution. The cruelty and spectacle of crucifixion serve as a deterrent and public display of power and punishment. Archaeological evidence of a crucifixion victim from the first century provides additional insights into the reality of this brutal form of punishment.
Jesus' Last Words
In the midst of his suffering, Jesus demonstrates compassion and concern for others. He forgives those who have wronged him, thinks of his father and mother, and exemplifies selflessness and love. Through his final words, Jesus fulfills his purpose and willingly surrenders his life, carrying out the will of his Father and completing the infinite and perfect atonement.
Jesus boldly declares his identity before Caiaphas
In Matthew 26:57-68, Jesus is brought before Caiaphas, the high priest, and the council seeks false witnesses to put him to death. Jesus boldly declares himself as the Messiah, the Son of God, and the rightful King of Israel. This declaration sparks accusations of blasphemy and leads to physical abuse, including spitting, mocking, and slapping.
Pilate's dilemma and the release of Barabbas
After Jesus is taken back to Pilate, the Roman governor, he tries to find a way out of the political disaster. Pilate offers to release either Jesus or Barabbas, a notorious prisoner. Hoping the people will choose Jesus, Pilate is shocked when they demand the release of Barabbas instead. This ironic choice symbolizes the contrast between the true Son of God and a false criminal. Pilate, sensing the mounting pressure, faces a difficult decision as he grapples with what to do with Jesus.
