The Brand Called You The Century of Humiliation and China’s national narrative | David Martin Jones, Director of Research, Danube Institute, Budapest; Author
In this video, Ashutosh Garg interviews David Martin Jones, the Director of Research at the Danube Institute in Budapest, about his interest in China and his thoughts on the differences and similarities between the economic policies of Deng Xiaoping and Xi Jinping. Jones discusses his interest in China and how it began when he was teaching in Singapore and realized the depth of Asian culture. He goes on to explain Deng Xiaoping's pragmatism and his strategic decision to open up China to foreign direct investment, which led to astonishing growth. In contrast, Xi Jinping's China is more developed and has its own competitive tech industries, allowing it to export its models to the world. Jones also notes that Deng's model emphasized growth and the development of a middle class, while Xi's model seems to be reining it in.
