Most of what we do in life revolves around our deepest needs. So long as those are met, everything else can fall into line.
But you and I both know (whether we want to admit it or not), love can be so one-sided. And in order to have a relationship that sizzles beyond infatuation, it takes work to give more than you take.
As this week has been a hard one for us, I was reminded of how you show love is as important in growing as a couple.
The challenge came from me being sick. I am not one who gets sick very often. So that really sets my husband back. He doesn't know how to help me because rarely does he see this.
So he stews about wondering what he can do to serve me, when all I want is to be left alone to do what I need to do and then eventually sleep.
Here is what I have learned over the years.
The spirit of true love does not assume, but asks always in love.
The K.I.S.S. ~ Ask always in love!So let's break it down from the beginning.
- Love without condition. This simply means putting what your spouse needs ahead of your needs.
- Talk without intention. Don't make every conversation contain a hidden agenda. Be sincere in your words. Listen more than you talk too.
- Give without reason. Do you really need a reason to give to your spouse? You should not!
- Care without expectation. Here it's taking care of your spouse from any area of life with absolutely no strings attached.
If we let our selfish desires get in the way of serving from the heart, that is the beginning of an unraveling effect in the marriage. It becomes more about you and less about your spouse. And that is the wrong order.
QUESTION: Would you break your spouse's fall if it would protect him/her from injury, even with the risk of hurting yourself?
The spirit of true love is not calculated love. It's love that stands the test of time regardless of the situation.
- In sickness and in health
- For richer or poorer
- For better or for worse
