Deep dives
Disconnect between mind and body in modern society
In modern society, there is a prevalent disconnect between the mind and the body. The constant emphasis on logic and reasoning over intuition and being in tune with the body has led to a society that is predominantly up in their heads. This disconnect has negative consequences, such as repressing emotions and feelings, which can manifest as pain, discomfort, illness, or dis-ease. It is important to acknowledge and address this disconnect in order to lead a more balanced and integrated life.
Signs of being too much in the head
There are clear signs that indicate if someone is spending too much time in their head. Overthinking is one such sign, as it can create new problems and hinder happiness. Difficulty making decisions, excessive rumination, and being consumed by anxiety, worry, and fear are all indicators of being stuck in the mind. Another sign is being disconnected from the present moment and not fully engaging with the world around us. Forgetting to breathe properly and focusing on consumption rather than creativity are further signs of being too much in the head.
Ways to reconnect with the body
Reconnecting with the body involves engaging in activities that provide a felt experience of being present in the body. Exercise, such as walking, yoga, and dancing, can be effective in shifting the focus away from the mind and into the physical sensations of the body. Breathing exercises, meditation, and being intimate with someone are other practices that help cultivate a connection with the body. Additionally, spending time in nature, putting away electronic devices, and engaging in relaxing activities like lying on the floor or gardening can aid in getting out of the head and into the body.
In our western culture, intelligence, logic and reason are highly valued as the means to success and accomplishment. Consequently, we have become disconnected from our own bodies. Many of us have become unable to hear it’s wisdom and intelligence which show up as feelings in the body. Or, if we are aware of these feelings, we repress them to the point where they may become expressed as illness or dis-ease. Ted discusses the importance of a strong connection with our bodies and how to do that by “getting out of our heads.”
