Deep dives
Trends in Modern Docs
The approach to documentation has evolved from static text to interactive content. While some prefer traditional text-based documentation for its versatility and accessibility, others seek more interactive features. The focus is on understanding user needs and preferences rather than blindly following trends. Tailoring documentation formats to target audiences is key, ensuring content aligns with user expectations and learning styles.
Feedback and Evolution of Docs
Collecting user feedback plays a crucial role in enhancing documentation. Observing users interact with docs can lead to significant improvements. Understanding user pain points and addressing them in a timely manner can positively impact the user experience. Iterative feedback loops help in refining content and adapting to user needs effectively.
Impact of AI on Docs
The integration of AI in documentation remains a topic of interest. While AI offers potential benefits in surfacing relevant content and automating information retrieval, challenges exist in maintaining context and ensuring content quality. Balancing AI-driven enhancements with maintaining user-centric, high-quality, and context-rich content is essential for effective documentation practices.
AI in Content Creation
AI tools can aid in enhancing content creation by providing writing suggestions and optimizing content delivery. Features like pattern matching and style recommendations can assist non-expert writers in producing high-quality documentation. While AI can streamline certain aspects of content generation, human oversight and expertise remain key in ensuring accurate, trustworthy, and user-friendly documentation.
Future Outlook for Docs
As the landscape of documentation evolves, the focus shifts towards maintaining human touch in content creation while leveraging AI tools for efficiency. Collaboration between AI-driven tools and human writers can enhance the quality and accessibility of documentation. It is essential to balance technological advancements with user-centric approaches to create effective and engaging documentation experiences.

Andrew Jiang: Prior to joining Fern to build out Fern Docs, I was a Forward Deployed Engineer at Palantir. Before Palantir, I frequented MLH hackathons as a student at USC (class of 19). I've worked across frontend and backend stacks and on infrastructure teams, on problems ranging from aircraft maintenance, clinical trials, and supply chain optimization, to generative AI for the US government. I joined Fern to solve the problem that has plagued my entire work experience as an engineer: writing and maintaining beautiful documentation.
