Being able to tell stories and rally a team behind a shared goal is crucial for career growth, especially in product management. Good storytelling techniques and public speaking skills can compensate to some extent for product leaders who may not excel in these areas. However, not reaching a decent level of storytelling and public speaking can be considered a career hindrance. Developing these skills is essential for product managers to effectively communicate their ideas, motivate their teams, and progress in their careers.
To become a better coach for product managers, there are five key ingredients to focus on. Firstly, develop a solid definition of what a good product person looks like in your specific context. Secondly, have a clear understanding of where each individual product manager currently stands in their career and set a vision for their future growth. Thirdly, ensure alignment by sharing this vision with the product manager and engaging in conversations to understand their perspectives. Fourthly, help them create a development plan to strengthen their skills and knowledge. Lastly, follow up regularly to provide guidance and support, reminding them to prioritize their personal growth.
Joining a community of product managers can have a significant impact on personal and professional growth. Communities provide opportunities for learning, sharing experiences, and seeking advice from peers. Engaging with a community of practice can lead to improved skills, knowledge, and career advancement. Product managers can benefit from both internal communities within their organizations and external communities, such as growth-minded product management communities online. Being part of a community fosters stickiness in a company, reduces the burden of people development on product leaders, and creates a fun and supportive environment for growth.
Coaching PMs to be successful is straightforward and requires understanding their needs and giving them actionable tasks. It is important to help them grasp concepts like hypothesis-driven product development and provide practical advice for daily tasks.
Becoming a better storyteller as a PM involves putting in the time and effort to create compelling narratives. It is crucial to plan and work on storytelling, understanding different audiences, and using language that resonates with their minds and hearts.

In today’s podcast, we talk about Petra’s book, and how to help your team grow as a product leader. Petra also shares how to improve your storytelling skills, get better at public speaking, and why community is so important for product managers.
