The controlled designation of origin for Sicilian wines was established on 22nd November 2011 by a decree issued by the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies. On 12th June 2012, the same wine growers, winemakers and bottling companies that supported recognition of the DOC, established the Consorzio di Tutela Vini Doc Sicilia with the aim of promoting the production of Sicilian wine and its area of production. The consortium boasts about 3,000 wine growers amongst its members and, thanks to this high level of representation, it has been attributed erga omnes status by the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies. The consortium’s role therefore lies in the protection, promotion, development, provision of consumer information and general supervision of all matters related to Sicilia DOC wines.
