Creating a Space for Growth and Exploration
Movement Beelerfield, founded by Julian Distelhof, aims to provide a space where individuals can explore their movement potential and cultivate personal growth. Julian emphasizes the importance of opening up one's horizon and realizing that there is no perfect way. He believes in creating an environment where people feel motivated to try new things and push their boundaries. The focus is on helping individuals discover their own unique path and potential by offering a variety of experiences and ideas. Through this approach, Julian encourages self-exploration, personal development, and the realization that change is always possible.
Teaching and Empowering with an Ecological Approach
Julian takes an ecological approach to teaching, inspired by his experiences in different schools and with various teachers. He emphasizes the importance of guiding students to find their own answers and realizations rather than providing ready-made solutions. Julian believes in asking questions that stimulate curiosity and critical thinking, allowing individuals to develop their own understanding and take ownership of their growth. He encourages students to trust their own journey and not be afraid to try new things, facilitating an environment that promotes individuality and personal development.
Embracing the Journey and Emphasizing Self-Realization
Julian's teaching approach is focused on empowering individuals to embrace their unique paths and potential. He acknowledges that everyone's journey is different and that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to movement. Through his own experiences and interactions with other teachers and communities, Julian has come to realize that the key is not to search for a perfect way, but to trust in oneself and continually explore possibilities. He encourages students to challenge societal dogmas and beliefs that limit their growth. Julian's aim is to create a space where individuals can discover their own potential and live a fulfilling life.
Being a Role Model and Promoting Change
As a teacher, Julian strives to be a role model by living the values and teachings he shares. He believes in being authentic, honest, and continuously evolving. Julian aims to inspire individuals to make positive changes in their own lives and to see movement as not only a physical practice but also a lifestyle. By providing guidance, ideas, and motivation, Julian helps his students tap into their own potential, challenge their limits, and create positive change. He emphasizes the importance of being open to different perspectives, constantly learning, and embracing the challenges that come with growth.
The Power of Movement for Personal Growth
Movement serves as a gateway to positive change, allowing individuals to transform their relationships, careers, and personal behavior. The speaker shares a powerful anecdote about a woman who, after experiencing the positive effects of movement during a personal training session, realizes the potential for growth and transformation throughout her life. The speaker emphasizes the importance of creating opportunities for individuals to have similar realizations and advocates for changes in the education system to incorporate movement, personal development, and social engagement.
The Holistic Approach: Nature, Self, and Society
The episode explores a holistic approach to personal development, encompassing three key aspects: interacting with nature, developing oneself, and engaging with society. The speaker emphasizes the importance of reconnecting with the body and deepening awareness of one's physical state. They discuss the significance of being aware of one's surroundings in nature, participating in a diverse ecosystem, and understanding the complexity of natural systems. The podcast also highlights the importance of self-reflection, asking the right questions, and journaling as tools for personal growth. The speaker shares personal experiences with challenging narratives, embracing stillness, and the benefits of proper rest and sleep. The episode concludes by discussing the impact of teaching methods and the power of creating a safe and supportive learning environment for personal transformation.
Julian Disterhoft of Movement Bielefeld (@movementbielefeld) is on the Passive Hang podcast! Julian runs a movement school in Bielefeld, Germany, teaching a generalised practice on many different subjects and aspects of movement. He’s learnt from many of the very best in the field, travelling the world over to seek, practice and research.
A few months back, Julian came to Australia for Juan Rueda’s 9 week intensive program. During that time, he stayed at my house, and we had the joy of going to many trainings together. You can view a video log of our experience going to Praksis together on YouTube. Evenings were filled with discussion on various topics and debriefs from the day. We share some thoughts of that experience in this podcast.
Julian spends a lot of time educating himself, and thinking about education. What does it mean to guide someone in a movement practice? How can I be a better teacher? How can I communicate more effectively? How can I construct an environment preferential for learning? In this podcast we discuss what are some of the key concepts in how Julian tries to guide people towards in order to help people find their own path in a physical practice.
Julian has been running his school for many years now, and he describes his transformation into becoming confident in your own style of teaching and material. It can be difficult trusting yourself - that you are enough, a challenge I think many people who teach face. His journey is one that I think many will find helpful.
