Joel was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 1991 and pitched for both the Philadelphia Phillies and Baltimore Orioles in the 1990s. He then went on to pitch for the New Jersey Jackals in the Northern League East and the Canadian American Association, coming in clutch with pitching in the 2004 playoff season, and going 59-19 in total with the Jackals. He played a total of 17 years of professional baseball.
