Deep dives
The Changing Landscape of the Internet and Crisis of Trust
Alexander Bina discusses how the internet has evolved over the years, from a place of optimism and connectivity to a darker and more polarized space. He highlights how the internet has become a breeding ground for cultural polarization and a lack of trust in institutions. With narrative wars and a multipolar battle for truth online, he emphasizes the importance of going beyond the intellectual and utilizing practices like meditation and inquiry to navigate the complexities of online discourse.
Combining Contemplative Practice and Cultural Engagement
Bina explores the balance between cultural/political engagement and wisdom traditions. He emphasizes the need to integrate both sides and feels strongly about combining practices to cultivate perspectival fluidity. By stepping back and zooming in, he believes we can develop the capacity to see beyond our ideological perspectives and engage in deeper dialogue. He also highlights the potential of contemplative practices as tools for evaluating information, building discernment, and fostering connections in online spaces.
The Potential of Psychedelic Renaissance
Bina expresses his interest in exploring the integration of different modalities alongside the emerging field of psychedelic therapy. He emphasizes the importance of exploring the rituals and processes that accompany psychedelics, suggesting that the practices and context surrounding the experience may be more influential than the drug itself. Bina also mentions the potential of combining psychedelics with practices like inquiry, somatic experiencing, and mindfulness, highlighting the need for further research and exploration in this area.
The Power of Inquiry and Essential Self
Bina shares his belief in the transformative power of inquiry and emphasizes the value of connecting with one's essential self. He explores the practice of zooming out and zooming in to gain perspectival fluidity and engage with the world. Bina also discusses the importance of developing an ecology of practices, combining various meditation techniques and other modalities to deepen self-awareness and navigate the complexity of the information age.
Ep. 29 (Part 1 of 2) | Rebel Wisdom co-founder Alexander Beiner has his finger on the cultural pulse of our times. Here he explores key challenges we face as a global community: sensemaking and truth finding in a culture that has lost its coherence as well as its sense of the divine, and what role psychedelics might play both therapeutically and spiritually in healing our culture. He discusses the need to go beyond the intellectual to find clarity and coherence, using embodied practices like meditation and inquiry, and explains how modalities such as these are an essential container for therapeutic psychedelic experiences. What if deep, spiritual, psychotherapeutic group processes were to inform political decision making? Are commodification and economics going to subvert the benefits of the psychedelic renaissance? Let’s start asking, what do we want these substances to bring to the culture, and who has the authority to decide what psychedelics are used for? Ali brings keen insight and the wisdom of a dedicated contemplative to asking the important questions and offering up some answers as well. Recorded September 27, 2021.
