Deep dives
Dutch rebellion and communications networks
During the Dutch rebellion against Spain, communications networks played a vital role. The Dutch postal system, known as Turn and Taxis, was instrumental in their fight for independence. The Dutch provided an opportunity to weaken Spain, but due to their Protestant beliefs, it was challenging for other Catholic powers to openly support them. However, the resilience of the Dutch revolution played a significant role in shaping the modern world.
The importance of ambiguity
Thomas Pynchon's exploration of ambiguity in his writings offers valuable insights. Ambiguity can be a powerful tool, allowing readers to delve deeper and make their own interpretations. James Jesus Angleton, former head of CIA counterintelligence, understood the significance of ambiguity, as he himself was an avid reader of poetry. In the realm of espionage, ambiguity plays a crucial role in deciphering coded messages and understanding covert operations.

Second of three episodes on the Crying of Lot 49, I'm joined by Dr. Pig Bodine aka CJ (@Pussy___Teeth) and Boyd Beaver (@Boyd_Beaver) to discuss Thomas Pynchon's 1966 novel, the Crying of Lot 49. In this episode, Boyd walks us through the surprisingly interesting and relevant 16th century Dutch revolution and its importance to the novel. He explains to us how postal systems and intelligence went hand in hand and how many of the characters from the confounding Jacobean revenge play of the novel are real people. Boyd lays out what Pynchon is getting at, and does a fantastic job doing the deeper dives into history that Pynchon's novels encourage of its readers. To conclude, we go out with another one of CJ's loving renditions of Pynchon's songs.
