Brian Klaas, UCL Associate Professor in Global Politics, discusses how Trump's damaging actions have undermined American democracy, the dangers of Trump 2.0, and the potential for political violence. The podcast explores the normalization of extreme rhetoric, division in America, the consequences of a re-elected Trump, and issues with polling and Trump's campaign.
Trump's extreme rhetoric and lack of accountability pose a threat to democracy by eroding a shared sense of reality.
If Trump wins a second term, he could undermine democratic norms and consolidate power, potentially leading to the erosion of checks and balances in the US system.
Deep dives
Trump's Dangerous Rhetoric and Its Impact
Trump's rhetoric includes echoes of dictators and historical references. He uses words like vermin and accuses his opponents of poisoning the nation. This rhetoric has not received significant press coverage, allowing it to go largely unchecked. Supporters of Trump are living in a funhouse mirror version of reality, where conspiracy theories are believed and a shared sense of reality is absent. This breakdown of reality is a threat to democracy, as compromise becomes impossible without agreement on basic facts.
The Media, Lies, and Trump's Manipulation
The American media has struggled to effectively counter Trump's lies and extreme rhetoric. Trump's thousands of false statements during his presidency did not have a lasting impact on his base of supporters. The asymmetry of American news, with highly polarized outlets like Fox News, further contributes to the divided perceptions of reality. This lack of accountability allows Trump to get away with outrageous statements. If Trump loses, there is a high likelihood of political violence, fueled by his supporters' belief in conspiracy theories and their perception of him as a victim.
Threats to American Democracy Under Trump
If Trump wins a second term, he presents a significant threat to American democracy. His plans include consolidating power by replacing nonpartisan civil servants with loyalists. The checks and balances of the US system would be undermined, allowing Trump to have greater control over foreign policy and potentially withdraw from NATO. While Congress still has power, many Republican members have shown a willingness to align with Trump and support his actions, further eroding democratic norms.
Challenges and Uncertainties in the 2024 Election
The 2024 election presents challenges and uncertainties. Traditional polling methods may not accurately reflect the electorate, especially younger voters who are less likely to respond to surveys. Additionally, Trump's rhetoric and potential indictments could sway voters in key states. If Biden is cast as the lesser of two evils, he may gain support regardless of his approval ratings. However, Trump's die-hard base is unlikely to be swayed by any negative revelations or convictions, posing a challenge to the electoral process.
In twelve months’ time America will inaugurate a new President. It could be a man who says he’ll act as a “dictator on day one,” who rejects elections if he doesn’t win them, and whose America First ideas could shatter what remains of the global order.
With a year to go, UCL Associate Professor in Global Politics Brian Klaas tells Gavin Esler how Donald Trump has damaged American politics more deeply than anyone realises – how driving Trump off mainstream social media to Truth Social only hid his increasingly fascistic outbursts from public view – and what it will take to stop him.
• “Trump 2.0 would be way more dangerous than Trump 1.0.”
• “It is highly likely that if Trump loses there will be significant political violence – probably worse than Jan 6.”
• “Once you don’t have a shared sense of reality, democracy falls apart.”
• “Come November, nobody will be able to say they didn’t know what was going on. He’s been completely open about it.”
