Mold illness and toxic exposure to environmental toxins, such as polluted air in water-damaged buildings, can lead to symptoms originating from neuroinflammation. Expert physician Dr. Craig Tenio discusses the importance of identifying mold, understanding its impact, and addressing the root cause of the issue. A step-by-step process is outlined, highlighting the need to create a clean environment, manage inflammation, support detoxification, and promote healing of the brain and body.
Neuroinflammation, a key factor in many fatiguing illnesses and medically unexplained symptoms, often stems from toxic exposure to mold. Inhaling toxic air in water-damaged buildings can lead to ineffective immune responses, resulting in inflammation that affects the brain, pituitary, and hypothalamus. Symptoms such as fatigue, anxiety, muscle and skin problems, blurry vision, and frequent urination can arise. Static shocks when touching objects may also be a symptom. Mold-related neuroinflammation can impact brain health and contribute to conditions such as cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease.
Mold exposure primarily occurs in buildings with construction flaws or water damage. Mold can grow on materials like drywall, feeding on moisture and heat. While visible mold is easy to address, hidden mold behind walls, under sinks, or in basements is concerning. Symptoms of mold exposure include fatigue, anxiety, skin issues, blurry vision, and frequent urination. Urinary mycotoxin testing can help diagnose mold-related illness, but it is essential to recognize that mold is not the sole cause of symptoms. Actinomyces bacteria and endotoxins may also contribute to inflammation and require consideration during assessment and treatment.
Treating mold-related illnesses involves a step-by-step approach. The initial focus is on removing patients from the mold-contaminated environment to improve symptoms. Attention is then directed toward managing inflammation through the use of free fatty acids, phosphatidylcholine, butyrate, and medications like synapse to alleviate symptoms of neuroinflammation. Preparation for binder therapy is crucial before addressing toxin removal. Detoxification methods, both pharmaceutical and natural, help eliminate toxins from the body. Supporting mitochondrial function and promoting neuroplasticity contribute to healing and restoration of brain function. This comprehensive approach takes time, typically spanning months to years, depending on the severity and duration of symptoms.
The research in the field of fatiguing illnesses, such as chronic fatigue syndrome, myologic and cephalomyelitis, and mold-related illness, is expected to provide valuable insights into these conditions. There are similarities in the metabolic pathways involved, and the funding dedicated to these conditions has not matched the level of disability and illness in the population. This influx of research funding could be a game-changer.
The diagnosis and treatment of fatiguing illnesses, including chronic fatigue syndrome, have often been hindered by biases and mislabeling. Historically, women have been more likely to be dismissed or labeled as psychosomatic. However, objective measures of fatigue are now available, and there is no evidence to support the idea of psychosomatic conditions. Patients have been underserved due to a lack of understanding and proper medical attention. The medical profession needs to improve its approach to fatiguing illnesses, including addressing environmental factors like mold.
