In this podcast, Dr. Pam Davis discusses adult ADHD, including symptoms, missed childhood diagnoses, and navigating the condition. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by lower levels of dopamine and norepinephrine, and while symptoms may reduce with age, impulsivity and emotional dysregulation tend to remain stable throughout life.
ADHD should ideally be diagnosed before age 12, but symptoms may be missed or misdiagnosed, particularly in highly intellectual children, and diagnosis is crucial in order to seek appropriate treatment.
Deep dives
ADHD Overview
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is present from birth, characterized by symptoms of hyperactivity, impulsivity, and difficulty focusing. It is often diagnosed in childhood, but can also be diagnosed in adulthood. ADHD is not a choice or a result of parenting or lack of discipline. It is caused by lower levels of neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. While ADHD symptoms may reduce with age, impulsivity and emotional dysregulation tend to remain stable throughout life.
The Importance of Diagnosis and Treatment
ADHD should ideally be diagnosed before age 12, but symptoms may be missed or misdiagnosed, particularly in highly intellectual children. Diagnosis is crucial in order to seek appropriate treatment. Stimulant medications can increase dopamine and norepinephrine levels, thereby reducing impulsivity and improving focus. However, medication alone is not enough, and other strategies and interventions, including therapy, psychosocial support, and learning strategies, should also be considered.
Overlap with Trauma
There is significant overlap between ADHD symptoms and trauma symptoms, which can make diagnosis and differentiation challenging. Childhood trauma can trigger ADHD symptoms, but diagnosis is based on symptom onset and response to medication. Therapy is essential for individuals with trauma, ADHD, or both, as it helps address and manage symptoms and provides support for the unique challenges faced in relationships and daily life.
Living with ADHD
ADHD is a lifelong condition that requires ongoing management. Building a supportive community and seeking therapy can help individuals with ADHD find understanding and acceptance. Strategies such as making lists, using timers, and finding a job that allows for flexibility and change can be helpful. Creativity and play can also have a calming effect on the nervous system. Compassion, both for oneself and others, is essential in navigating the challenges and strengths associated with ADHD.
Have you ever wondered if you or a loved one may have adult ADHD? It's estimated that more than 8 million Americans, nearly 5% of the population, are living with this condition – many without even realizing it, as reported by WebMD.
While ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition present from birth, it often goes undiagnosed until adulthood. This topic is gaining increasing awareness, and an adult diagnosis can lead to newfound self-awareness, helping individuals shed years of shame and confusion.
