Using AI to Improve Diagnosis of Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a mental illness characterized by psychotic symptoms such as hearing voices and delusional thinking. However, getting a definitive diagnosis can be a lengthy process, leading to delayed treatment and poorer outcomes. To address this, researchers like Matt Knorr are exploring how artificial intelligence (AI) can aid in early diagnosis and monitoring. In a recent study, Knorr used AI language models to analyze speech patterns in people with schizophrenia. By assessing the coherence and semantic distance of words used in speech samples, the AI models were able to detect subtle differences and predict symptom severity. This approach shows promise in detecting early signs of illness and assessing treatment effectiveness.
