Ritualization occurs as a way to reduce the cost and energy associated with the behavior. Animals also ritualize their conflicts and mating behaviors to avoid excessive costs. Humans follow a similar pattern, ritualizing various behaviors to cut down on costs and convey meaning. This can be observed in the way we greet and interact with others, as well as in religious rituals. Ritual behavior becomes more and more ordered, compressing meaning and binding individuals together. By offering sacrifices or engaging in religious ceremonies, humans aim to connect with something greater than themselves and unify various aspects of their lives.
