Deep dives
Ordering behavior and ritualization
Behavior, whether in animals or humans, becomes ordered as it moves towards a goal, and this can be seen in various aspects of life, such as hunting or even navigating to a river. Ritualization occurs as a way to reduce the cost and energy associated with the behavior. Animals also ritualize their conflicts and mating behaviors to avoid excessive costs. Humans follow a similar pattern, ritualizing various behaviors to cut down on costs and convey meaning. This can be observed in the way we greet and interact with others, as well as in religious rituals. Ritual behavior becomes more and more ordered, compressing meaning and binding individuals together. By offering sacrifices or engaging in religious ceremonies, humans aim to connect with something greater than themselves and unify various aspects of their lives.
Trade-off between power and ritualization
There is a trade-off between power and ritualization in behavior. While ritualization can enhance meaning and purpose, certain behaviors, such as those in martial arts, began favoring power over ritualization. Martial arts started as ritualized fighting, but individuals began prioritizing efficient techniques to win fights, leading to the emergence of mixed martial arts (MMA) where power is the focus. However, even in MMA, rules are implemented to prevent excessive harm and maintain some form of ritualization. It is essential to strike a balance between ritual and power, as different contexts require different levels of order and meaning.
Understanding religion and ritual behavior
Religious behavior should not be isolated but seen as an extension of other ordered behaviors. By connecting various types of behavior, including religious rituals, to the pursuit of meaning and higher purposes, a more comprehensive understanding of religion can be achieved. Ritualization in religion serves to bind individuals together, scales up behavior towards transcendence, and realizes the infinite source that holds everything together. By recognizing the connection between ritualization and ordered behavior, we can better appreciate the uniqueness of religious practices and their significance in human societies.
There is a tendency to isolate religious behavior from other human behavior, which can make religious behavior seem arbitrary or ridiculous. In this week's video, I argue that the best way to understand religion, even from a purely materialist perspective, is to understand it as an extension of other types of ritualized behavior, even those we can find among animals.
