State of the Product Industry Survey
A recent industry-wide survey conducted with 925 product-based business owners provided valuable insights into the changing landscape of the product industry. The survey aimed to shed light on business models, revenue streams, tech tools, and industry trends, showcasing the impact of major shifts like supply chain issues and labor shortages. The survey revealed a mix of new and established businesses participating, with a significant portion operating alone without support. Key details shared included annual revenue, take-home pay, workforce details, essential tech tools, and future business outlook.
Revenue Streams and Growth Patterns
The survey highlighted that 79% of respondents engage in wholesale sales, while 98% sell directly to consumers across various platforms. Diving into revenue streams and growth, insights showed a correlation between the number of revenue streams and total revenue, with multiple streams potentially impacting profitability. The report also analyzed gross revenue data, indicating that higher revenue businesses tend to stabilize work hours and take-home pay. Positive growth trajectories were reported by 81% of participants, with a significant majority expecting to continue their business in the next five years.
Technology and Marketing Insights
Analysis of technology usage revealed that 66% of participants rely on Shopify, while marketing efforts predominantly focus on Instagram, email, and Facebook. Results also highlighted the utilization of third-party platforms like Fair, Etsy, and Instagram for sales. The survey emphasized the importance of aligning marketing platforms with customer acquisition sources for optimal results. Business struggles encompassed acquiring new customers, cash flow challenges, project management, and marketing, with personal CEO struggles revolving around work-life balance, burnout, decision fatigue, and imposter syndrome.
Every day, I hear from product-based business owners who are curious about other people's business models, revenue streams, team structure, tech stack, how much revenue they're not only earning but what profit they're taking home, and how much they're paying themselves.
Although we know that every business is different, it is completely natural to want to see behind the scenes and the curtains of another brand in your industry. But more than ever, it's more than curiosity now. We know that our product industry has experienced major shifts over the last several years.

My team and I put together an industry-wide survey. We had 925 product-based business owners who anonymously shared their business details with us.
