Deep dives
Shutting down a successful product
Colleen faced the challenging decision to shut down a successful product, even though it was close to generating a quarter million ARR. She believed that the product was leading to a business model she didn't want to work at - a productized consulting service that required scaling the team alongside revenue. By making this pivot, she aimed to build the type of business she desired.
Journey towards becoming a product founder
Colleen started as a Ruby developer, and her desire to build products drove her indie hacking journey. She valued the freedom and decision-making opportunities that came with owning her destiny. Colleen launched her first product, Simple File Upload, which solved the problem of building a responsive file uploader. Along the way, she co-hosted the Software Social podcast, an opportunity that helped her gain visibility and eventually secure funding for her current project, Hello Query.
Benefits of having a co-founder
Colleen highlighted the downsides of being a solo founder, emphasizing the emotional toll and lack of shared responsibility. In her experience, having a co-founder brought a new level of support and made the journey less lonely. She expressed the importance of finding alignment and someone to share the load and decision-making process. This influenced her decision to join Hammerstone as an equal partner and motivated her vision for Hello Query, where co-founders work together daily.
In this episode I’m joined by Colleen Schnettler, which a lot of you would have heard from through her Software Social podcast she co-hosts with Michele Hansen. Colleen has been on quite the journey over the past few years, going from years of contracting to launching her first product, Simple File Upload, then getting a large contracting gig with Hammerstone, landing a separate full-time job to then quit 3 weeks later to rejoin that Hammerstone as a co-founder. Now Colleen is working on a product called HelloQuery, a reporting tool for SQL queries which has been accepted into a recent TinySeed batch.
