Deep dives
The Importance of Food in Connecting People and God
Food has the potential to connect us more closely to ourselves, to others, and ultimately to God. It serves as a great integrator, encompassing the cosmic to the intimate and everything in between. Food is a reminder of our dependence upon God, and its consumption is an enactment of our vulnerability, contingency, and lack of self-sufficiency. Recognizing the sacredness of food and our connection to the land from which it comes can deepen our sense of wonder and amazement. By revitalizing traditions of ceremony and liturgy surrounding food, we can foster a stronger bond between food and the divine.
The Disconnect between Food and the Body
Our current relationship with food often fails to acknowledge the crucial connection between food and our bodies. As physical beings, we require calories to thrive and function in various aspects, including science and faith. Nourishment is not solely about sustenance, but about the taste and sensory experience that food provides. Recognizing the vital role food plays in supporting our material existence can lead to a deeper appreciation for its significance.
The Loss of Connection between Food and the Land
Over time, our relationship with food has become increasingly disconnected from the land. Many of us no longer witness the growing or raising of our food, resulting in a lack of awareness and understanding about where it comes from. This disconnection has led to a loss of food diversity and has made our food system vulnerable to pests and disease. By recognizing the importance of the land in the production of our food, we can cultivate a greater appreciation for the interconnectedness of the natural world.
Food as a Gift from God and a Reminder of Divine Grace
Food is not merely a commodity, but a gift from God that sustains us. Through food, we experience a connection to the sacred, as it reflects our vulnerability, contingency, and dependency. Embracing food as a sacramental act and participating in rituals and liturgies can deepen our understanding of the divine presence in our lives. Seeing food as a reflection of grace and gratitude can transform our relationship with it and foster a sense of awe and celebration.
Food is a great connector. It can connect us to the ground and the soil that produces food, to the plants and animals that turn into food, and to one another. It also has the possibility of connecting us better to God. In part one of the series we talk about some of these connections, eventually leading us to the idea that food is a gift. In the rest of the series we’ll consider what that might mean about how we eat, what we eat, and how gathering around a table, whether it’s a communion table or a dining room table, can strengthen our connections to the world, to each other, and to God.
