Hi Plant Friends,
This week we meet Dr Melanie Joy. She is an American social psychologist and author, primarily notable for coining the term carnism.
At the age of 23, while a student at Harvard, Melanie contracted a food-borne disease from a tainted hamburger and was hospitalised. This led her to become a vegetarian, before eventually transitioning to veganism.
Melanie introduced the term Carnism in a 2001 article published in Satya - an American monthly magazine which covered animal rights and social justice issues. The concept was revisited by her 2009 book Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows.
Celebrities such as the musician Moby have praised Melanie, saying that her work has the potential to revolutionise how we think.
