Deep dives
The Danger of Hero Syndrome
Hero syndrome, commonly found in startups and growth-focused companies, occurs when the focus is solely on growth and being big, leading to a loss of focus on solving specific problems. Without a clear understanding of the problems they aim to solve, companies with hero syndrome struggle to prioritize and define their target audience. This lack of focus hinders effective problem-solving through their products, as the sole focus becomes on becoming large rather than solving problems efficiently.
The Journey to Radical Product Thinking
Radika Dutt, author of Radical Product Thinking, embarked on writing the book after realizing the pattern of product diseases she encountered throughout her startup and corporate experiences. After witnessing others make the same mistakes, Dutt and her colleagues developed the radical product thinking framework to provide a systematic approach to building successful products. The framework emphasized the importance of clarity in vision and strategy, effective iteration, and alignment among teams. The positive response and demand for examples prompted Dutt to write the book, sharing the framework's principles and providing guidance on implementing radical product thinking.
Understanding Vision, Prioritization, and Trade-offs
Hero syndrome and other product diseases often arise from a lack of clear vision and misguided prioritization. Dutt emphasizes the need for a vision that serves as a filter, answering fundamental questions about the target audience, their problems, the need for change, and the desired future state. By aligning everyday actions with the vision, organizations can avoid product diseases and maintain focus. Prioritization, based on the balance between vision and survival, helps allocate resources effectively. This includes investing in the vision by tackling technical debt, as well as avoiding vision debt by prioritizing short-term gains over long-term vision. Finding the right balance between investing in the vision and survival is crucial for long-term product success.
