Effects of Deliberate Cold Exposure on Getting Sick
Deliberate cold exposure for short durations does not directly make one more susceptible to getting sick. After a brief period of deliberate cold exposure, as long as you warm up afterwards, the exposure itself does not enhance the likelihood of getting sick. However, being in cold, dry environments can increase vulnerability to viral and bacterial infections, as cold, dry air can thin the mucosal lining of the nose and mouth, making them more susceptible to infections.
Deliberate Cold Exposure and Immune System
Deliberate cold exposure, if done correctly and repeatedly over time, can increase immune system markers. Studies have shown that regular deliberate cold exposure can trigger the release and production of immune cells and immune molecules, making individuals more resilient against certain infections. However, it is difficult to determine how these trends translate to actual resistance to specific viruses or bacteria. The release of norepinephrine and epinephrine in response to cold exposure has been linked to enhanced immune system function, although chronic elevation of these molecules can suppress the immune response.
Recommendations for Deliberate Cold Exposure when Ill
If you are feeling good to great, deliberate cold exposure can be beneficial. However, if you are feeling ill, it is advisable to avoid stressful or challenging activities like deliberate cold exposure. Resting and conserving the body's resources to combat the infection is encouraged. When feeling rundown or mildly unwell, individuals can still choose to do deliberate cold exposure, but they should ensure to warm up well afterwards and consider drinking hot beverages. Nasal breathing is also recommended as it reduces the risk of infection through the mouth.
