Before You Kill Yourself: a suicide prevention podcast. DR. DREA LETAMENDI: RESILIENCE, WELLNESS AND SUPERHEROES
Joining me today is Dr. Drea Letamendi. Dr. Andrea (“Drea”) Letamendi is a Clinical Psychologist who received her Bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from UCSD. Dr. Letamendi currently serves at UCLA as the Associate Director of Mental Health Training, Intervention, and Response for Residential Life. Her primary role is as a mental health advisor and educator to students, staff, and faculty, and as a consultant to campus partners in the areas of student wellness and resilience. Dr. Letamendi developed and implemented UCLA’s suicide prevention model. In 2019, she was recognized as the Interim Director of the Resilience Center at UCLA called RISE, which is aimed at providing prevention and educational programs to students interested in improving their emotional wellness. She extends her professional work into public health education by intersecting psychological science with superheroes. For over 10 years, she has served as a psychological consultant for comic book writers and other creatives in television and film. Using art and narrative to teach psychology to wide audiences, Dr. Letamendi has led seminars and panels at conventions such as Comic Con and Geek Week. As a pop culture enthusiast and public health educator, Dr. Letamendi has been featured in news pieces and documentaries for MTV, CNN, and Warner Bros./ DC Comics. She shared her story of resilience in her TEDx Talk called “Capes, Cowls and Courage,” which can be found on Youtube.Website Info:
