Sleep is crucial for consolidating and integrating the things we learn during the day, as well as refining our existing knowledge. It allows for the refreshment of our brain's neural circuitry, enabling us to absorb new information effectively.
Forgetting is an essential aspect of memory and learning. While it may be distressing to forget information, it allows us to adapt our schema and make room for new knowledge. Schemas are the mental frameworks through which we perceive and understand the world.
Sleep consists of several phases, including stage 1, stage 2, and deep slow-wave sleep (which includes stages 3 and 4). Each phase serves different functions, such as memory consolidation, synaptic refinement, and the removal of waste and debris from the brain.
Schizophrenia is often characterized by hallucinations that resemble dream-like states. The disturbances in sleep and the inability to properly update one's schema could contribute to these hallucinations. Similarly, psychedelics can also induce dream-like states and alter the brain's neurotransmitter systems.
Sleep plays a primary role in our energy system and fat loss. Growth hormone is released during sleep and has a different impact when released in a bolus compared to being released gradually. Sleep also helps coordinate our circadian and sleep needs, allowing for optimal hormone release and efficient functioning of the body. Fat loss does not primarily happen during exercise but rather at night when our energy system is working on replenishing and repairing.
On average, healthy adults need 7.5 to 8 hours of sleep per night. Sleep cycles are approximately 90 minutes, and the first cycle is longer. It is important to align our circadian and homeostatic sleep needs, meaning going to bed and waking up at consistent times. Shift workers should adapt their schedules to ensure proper alignment. Exposure to bright morning light helps reset our circadian rhythms, while blue light plays a significant role in waking us up. Sleep needs differ between sexes due to hormonal fluctuations, and sleep patterns change as we age and go through different life stages.
According to the CDC,1 in 3 adults are not getting enough sleep. Poor quality sleep makes your ability to focus, think clearly, and retain information severely impaired.
