Deep dives
Extreme Control and Abuse Tactics
In this podcast episode, survivor Zach Comfort shares his experiences in the Bride of Christ Church, led by Thomas Clyde Smith Jr. The group's control tactics intensified after moving to a commune, with members being isolated from their families, forced to wear plain clothes, and deprived of access to external media. More extreme measures included physical abuse, such as slapping and beating members, as well as separating children from their families. Disturbingly, Smith cycled children through his own home for sexual abuse. The group's dissolution was marked by violent rituals and the expulsion of members.
Manipulation and Lies
The leader, Thomas Clyde Smith Jr., manipulated members by instilling fear and a sense of unworthiness. He weaponized confessions, forcing adults and children to publicly confess their sins and endure punishment, even for minor infractions. Smith would accuse members of homosexuality and lying, even as he engaged in hypocrisy himself, watching porn and breaking his own teachings. His manipulation was so effective that members internalized their supposed guilt, believing it justified the abuse they endured.
The Group's Downfall
As the control and abuse grew worse, Smith began to kick members out of the group, often using public humiliation as punishment. However, despite the escalating abuse, few people left voluntarily. The group's ultimate demise came when Smith announced that the members were unworthy and condemned to hell. Some begged to stay, but were eventually expelled. The group disbanded, with a few remaining members also being kicked out. The survivors, including Zach, left with a mix of relief and fear, struggling to reconcile their experiences and reclaim their lives.
Child deaths and control over members
The podcast episode discusses the tragic deaths of babies that occurred within the cult. In one instance, a baby was buried in the backyard after dying shortly after birth. The midwife, who was also a member of the cult, obtained a death certificate despite resistance from the cult leader. The other baby, born prematurely due to a fall, was taken to the hospital but was eventually removed from life support on the orders of the cult leader. Despite these horrific events, most members remained loyal due to the sunk cost fallacy and the belief that leaving would lead to damnation.
Manipulation, abuse, and control tactics
The podcast reveals the extent of manipulation, abuse, and control exercised by the cult leader. Members were coerced into giving away their children to other couples within the cult and were punished or expelled for minor infractions. The cult leader presented himself as a charismatic figure and would perform dramatic public displays when kicking people out. He also exploited the fears and beliefs of members, isolating them from the outside world and instilling a constant sense of danger and damnation if they were to leave. The podcast also highlights the long-lasting psychological impact of growing up in such an environment and the journey of healing and self-awareness for those who managed to escape.
In part two of Lola & Meagan's interview with Bride of Christ Church survivor Zacch Comfort, they discuss how leader Thomas Clyde Smith Jr's control tactics got more extreme once the group moved to the Oregon commune, including separating children from their families, requiring people to hit each other in church, and cycling children into his home for sexual abuse - as well as how the group ultimately fell apart, and what Zacch's life is like now working in a psychiatric hospital.
Plus, for Lola's cultiest thing of the week, she and her friend Liz Y2K discuss discovering a man they both dated has been arrested for serial rape, and how the police are seeking additional victims to come forward.
