Deep dives
Foundational Journey into Coffee
The founder of United Coffee Beans, Parviz Dadashov, began his journey into the coffee industry unexpectedly during a summer job while in school, which ignited his passion for hospitality. This pivotal experience led him to pursue studies in tourism and management, exploring various roles in the food and beverage sector. Despite the limited coffee culture in Azerbaijan at the time, he became fascinated with coffee’s complexities, prompting further research and training abroad. His exposure to the specialty coffee scene through training sessions in Turkey deepened his understanding and commitment to introducing specialty coffee to Azerbaijan.
Creating a Specialty Coffee Movement
Parviz recognized a significant gap in Azerbaijan's market for specialty coffee when he returned home after training abroad. Despite the nation’s strong tea culture, he saw potential to shift public perception and appreciation for coffee, leading him to create United Coffee Beans in 2017. His efforts involved establishing a community-centric business that not only focuses on importing and roasting quality coffee but also emphasizes education through the United Coffee Academy and workshops. This approach has positioned United Coffee Beans as a pioneer of the third wave coffee movement in Azerbaijan, reshaping the local coffee landscape.
Building Relationships and Hospitality
Understanding that the expertise of coffee is not enough alone, Parviz places a strong emphasis on hospitality and relationship-building within his business. By developing a welcoming environment and offering educational workshops, he introduces customers to the rich narratives and distinct flavors behind their coffee. Engaging with the community through pop-up events and workshops across different regions fosters a culture of curiosity and appreciation for specialty coffee. This commitment to customer service and education has cultivated a loyal following and helped transform how people in Azerbaijan interact with coffee.
Leadership and Community Empowerment
Reflecting on his growth from coffee enthusiast to business leader, Parviz highlights the importance of hands-on experience and continuous education in the food and beverage industry. He actively engages in nurturing his team, not just focusing on hiring experienced baristas but also training beginners through the United Coffee Academy. His journey involves a commitment to building a supportive community around coffee, ensuring both employees and customers feel inspired and valued. This holistic approach has turned United Coffee Beans into more than just a coffee shop; it serves as a community hub fostering connections and innovation in Azerbaijan's coffee culture.
