Deep dives
Passenger Rights: Refunds for Canceled Flights
If your flight is canceled, you are entitled to a cash refund. Airlines may offer alternatives like vouchers or rebooking, but you have the right to request a refund. The Department of Transportation enforces this rule, and passengers should report any non-compliance. It is important to be aware of your rights and not settle for less, even if it means fighting for a refund.
Delays and Customer Service Plans
Airlines must have a customer service plan that describes how they handle delays. While the specifics may vary, in some cases, if your domestic flight is delayed for over three hours or internationally for over six hours, you are entitled to a refund. However, even for shorter delays, airlines should take care of passengers by providing food and drink. The Department of Transportation is pushing for increased transparency, making it easier for passengers to access this information before choosing which airline to fly with.
Compensation for Delayed, Damaged, or Lost Baggage
If your baggage is delayed, damaged, or lost by the airline, you are entitled to compensation. The airline is responsible for reimbursing you for reasonable expenses related to the delay or damage, such as purchasing clothing, shoes, or toiletries. There is a cap on the compensation, usually up to $3,800. Passengers should save all receipts and follow the proper claims process to receive the reimbursement.
Involuntary Denied Boarding and Passengers' Rights
In the case of involuntary denied boarding, where passengers are bumped from a flight because the airline oversold tickets, passengers are entitled to compensation. The amount of compensation depends on the length of the delay caused by the bumping, ranging from 200% to 400% of the one-way fare. Passengers should be aware of their rights and not hesitate to assert them, filing reports to the Department of Transportation if necessary.
