How to Start a Podcast - Concept to Launch
On this episode the Podcasters Podcast we discuss the dos and don’ts of creating a concept for your podcast. This is not just what the show is about, it’s about how that information is put across.
How to Start a Podcast- Concept?
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Your podcast should be something you’re passionate about and able to create episodes on for a long time – years. You need to be able to communicate in a clear and simple way – your podcast should be described in a single sentence in as few words as possible. Don’t worry if there are already podcasts out there on your subject, your voice and your take on the subject is unique.
- The name of your podcast should also be simple – 3-5 words. Even though there aren’t that many active podcasts out there, there are still a lot of them. People need to be able to tell what your podcast is about as soon as they see it is key, even if it ends up saying exactly what the show is. It might seem like a boring name, but it’s all about bringing in cold listeners. As soon as they start listening, it won’t matter what the name is.
- Podcast artwork tiles are quite small, so make sure your logo and name are bold and bright and use large text. If you have a high quality image of yourself, it won’t hurt to have your face on the artwork, it could help listeners recognise you on social media. Don’t underestimate the importance and power of good artwork, people will judge your podcast by its artwork and decide whether it will be worth listening to before they listen.
- Your podcast bio should be between 100-150 words about what your show is, who it’s for and who you are. Don’t go too in-depth and don’t worry too much about jamming SEO keywords in there.
- Marketing funnels can be used to grow audiences: loads of people will see your artwork, then they’ll read the title, then they’ll tap through to your feed, read your show description and see your episode list. Then they’ll choose an episode to find out about, tap though, read your show description and then decide whether to listen or not. At each stage you have to make it as enticing and strong as possible to attract the most people through that funnel process.
