Steve Magness on Toughness, Coaching and Doing Hard Things

Steve Magness is a world-renowned expert on health and human performance. He is the co-author of the best-selling books Peak Performance and The Passion Paradox, and the author of The Science of Running.

And his new book, “Do Hard Things,” is arguably his best work – in my humble opinion!

Steve’s work has has appeared in Sports Illustrated, Wired, Outside, NY Magazine, and Forbes.

Oh and by the way – he’s one heckuva coach to boot!

Steve and I cover a ton of topics in this episode, starting with what “toughness” is – and why it may not your authoritarian coach like Bobby Knight.

We’ll talk about how YOU can find your own personal and unique coaching style, versus simply following the crowd.

In one of my favorite parts of the show, we talk about the old-school thought process of using conditioning to punish athletes, and what you should be doing instead.

And last but not least, we talk about how we can teach our clients and athletes the value of trusting the training process, while not being married to the outcomes – which we can’t always control.

This was a fantastic episode with Steve, and I really hope you enjoy it!

When you have those high-cortisol moments that linger after a game, you actually play worse the next game even if it’s days or a week later. – Steve Magness

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

  • How coaches can positively or negatively impact their athletes viewpoints on failure.
  • What you can do to figure out YOUR unique coaching style or DNA.
  • The use of conditioning as a punishment tool, and what you should be doing instead.
