Challenges in Maternal Healthcare

Maternal healthcare in the United States faces significant challenges, particularly highlighted by increasing rates of diabetes, hypertension, and substance use disorder among pregnant women. These issues are coupled with alarming disparities, as Black mothers are three to four times more likely to face mortality related to pregnancy compared to white mothers. The lack of comprehensive and evolving care protocols since the 1930s contributes to worsening outcomes as more women experience complications during pregnancy. Additionally, the decreasing availability of obstetric services, particularly in rural areas, exacerbates these issues amidst rising patient risks.
