Deep dives
Understanding Drive and Direction
Everyone possesses drive, but the direction of that drive greatly influences its outcomes. Drive can manifest in negative ways, such as addiction, where individuals may be intensely driven but not towards productive or positive goals. Conversely, people may appear inactive or stuck, yet they exert a strong drive in unproductive ways, demonstrating that drive exists even in seemingly negative states. The primary issue isn't a lack of drive, but finding a meaningful direction that leads to fulfillment and growth.
Catalysts for Change
Personal transformations often occur during pivotal life moments that act as catalysts for change, much like the 'inciting incidents' in superhero movies. Events such as job loss, health scares, or major life changes can prompt individuals to swiftly shift from a state of inertia to taking decisive action. This illustrates that drive is not absent, but may require an impetus or realization to redirect it effectively. Recognizing and harnessing these moments can spark significant personal growth and proactive behaviors.
Finding Direction Through Reflection
Determining one's direction in life requires careful introspection and effort, akin to plotting a cross-country road trip without modern navigation aids. Utilizing tools like the Ziegler Wheel of Life can provide structure to evaluate key life areas and clarify what one truly desires and why. The process involves asking deeper questions and potentially seeking guidance to uncover root motivations. While it may seem simple, this reflective work is essential for effectively channeling drive towards meaningful goals.
A popular topic when I’m being interviewed is my stance on drive. I believe every human has as much drive in them as anyone else. And further, that we are all driven. We are driven to be where we are and who we are. I’ve become known for stating that drug addicts are some of the most driven people on earth. But they are not driving forward, toward something positive and productive and fulfilling. All of us have all the drive we need and we are driven. But at any time, or in certain areas of your life, you may find yourself feeling you are in reverse. Or in park. Or stuck in first gear. It’s not a matter of having enough drive or being driven, but direction. Drive with me a moment
