Key members of ERC and RCUK, Gavin Perkins and Jasmeet Soar, discuss the new resuscitation guidelines for 2021. Topics include the importance of early recognition, bystander CPR, defibrillation, airway management, and advancements in CPR and ECMO. They also touch on the comparison of intraosys vs intravenous first approach, challenges in centralizing cardiac arrest services, and the debate around double sequential defibrillation.
Ultrasound for traumatic arrest allows targeted interventions based on cause.
Pediatric guidelines extend to 18 years old; clarify adult vs. pediatric treatment.
Deep dives
Ultrasound for Traumatic Cardiac Arrest
The use of ultrasound to identify the underlying cause of cardiac arrest in traumatic cases is now recommended, allowing for targeted resuscitation interventions based on the identified cause.
Pediatric Life Support Guidelines Update
The pediatric life support guidelines now encompass individuals up to 18 years old, excluding newborns. Patients who appear adult-like can be treated as adults, providing clarity on when each guideline should be referenced.
Monitoring Staff Exposure to Resuscitation
The guideline emphasizes the importance of emergency medical services monitoring staff exposure to resuscitation. Low exposure should be addressed to enhance the team's experience in resuscitation, potentially strengthening competence and confidence in delivering life support.
Adolescent Double Sequential Defibrillation
Double sequential defibrillation (DSD) should not be used outside research settings due to the lack of conclusive evidence showing improved outcomes. The Dose VF trial is awaited to provide more clarity on the role of DSD for refractory VF.
So the Resuscitation Council UK have today published new guidelines on resuscitation based on the European Resuscitation Council 2021 Guidelines and recommendations from the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation.
We were lucky enough to catch up with two key members of both ERC and RCUK, Gavin Perkins and Jasmeet Soar, gaining their valuable insights into the new guidelines.
As well as this Simon, Rob and James pick out some other key points from the guidelines and discuss how these may translate into systems and practice.
Once again we’d love to hear any thoughts or feedback either on the website or via twitter @TheResusRoom.
Enjoy!
