The stigma surrounding menopause is rooted in historical beliefs about women's relevance as they age, perpetuating the idea of women being 'expired' or less valuable post-reproductive years. This societal notion has contributed to the taboo nature of discussing menopause openly.
Managing menopause symptoms, such as loss of libido, involves various interventions like hormone therapy, including estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Testosterone therapy, applied through a cream, has been beneficial for enhancing libido and energy levels for some women.
Making shifts in lifestyle habits during perimenopause and menopause, characterized by hormone fluctuations and symptoms like sleep disturbances and changes in weight, can have a profound impact on women's well-being. Prioritizing nutrition, exercise, and self-care can help navigate this transitional phase.
Women experiencing changes in their physical appearance during menopause, like altered body shape, skin texture, and signs of aging, may face body image challenges. However, cultivating self-acceptance, embracing the natural aging process, and focusing on inner well-being can foster a positive outlook.
Different types of hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, play crucial roles in addressing symptoms such as hot flashes, dry skin, and hair changes. Testosterone affects libido, while progesterone can greatly impact sleep quality. Combining estrogen and progesterone is essential, with added considerations for testosterone. Managing these hormones involves careful consideration and personalized approaches to address individual experiences and symptoms.
Navigating stress during menopause is vital, emphasizing the need for self-care and prioritizing mental well-being. Reflecting on personal mortality and existential fears can lead to profound realizations about the importance of living in the present. Understanding the finite nature of life can inspire a sense of peace and motivate individuals to appreciate and embrace each moment, fostering a shift in perspective towards gratitude and mindfulness.
Lots of women are afraid of perimenopause and menopause, but they shouldn’t have to be. Tamsen Fadal is paving the way for a better future for women starting menopause by debunking fears and fighting for visibility.
Author, journalist, and documentary producer Tamsen Fadal made menopause education her life’s mission after going through it herself with little to no guidance. There are lots of myths and stigmas surrounding menopause and its treatment. For example, many women do not get hormone therapy that could change their lives because they are concerned about breast cancer risks. However, some of the risk around this is overstated. Tamsen believes that women should have choices in how they handle their menopause, and doctors need to be more educated to allow for those choices.
