Sacrament on a Submarine - April 2025 General Conference Applications – Return and Report: Elder Palmer, Bishop Caussé, and President Lund
8/24/2025: S5 E41, Episode 150, April 2025 General Conference Applications – Return and Report: Elder Palmer, Bishop Caussé, and President Lund.
*Special Guest*: Mitch and Clay were joined in this episode by Clay's former mission companion, Mark Fillmore. Mark is currently serving as a counselor in a bishopric in the northwestern United States. He shared powerful insights and stories. One powerful story Mark shared was what it was like to take the sacrament all alone somewhere deep in the ocean on a submarine - the USS Henry M. Jackson (SSBN 730). Mark said: "On a submarine, sleep was like gold. You wanted to sleep as much as possible because you didn't get very much. And it would have been easy for me, I guess, to just sleep and not hold religious services, especially because it was just me. No one would know if I didn't do it... except I would know."
Clay, Mitch, and Mark reported how they have taken action on the following invitations from the April 2025 General Conference addresses delivered by Elder S. Mark Palmer, Bishop Gérald Caussé, and President Steven J. Lund:
Elder Palmer:
1. "Feel the witness of the Holy Ghost as you now hear this loving invitation and magnificent promise from our Saviour, Jesus Christ: 'Will ye not now return unto me, and repent of your sins, and be converted, that I may heal you?'"
2. "When some of Jesus's followers in Capernaum found His teachings hard and chose to leave, He turned to His Apostles and asked, 'Will ye also go away?' This is the question we each must answer as we face our individual times of testing."
3. "[Focus] your faith on Jesus Christ and His gospel—the trunk and the roots."
Bishop Caussé:
1. "My dear friends, if you ever feel limited or disadvantaged by the circumstances of your life, I want you to know this: The Lord loves you personally. He knows your circumstances, and the door to His blessings remains wide open to you no matter the challenges you face."
2. "The Lord asks us to do 'all we can' and to 'offer [our] whole souls as an offering unto him.' This requires a deep desire, a sincere and faithful heart, and our utmost diligence in keeping His commandments and aligning our will with His."
President Lund:
1. "The Aaronic Priesthood is called the preparatory priesthood partly because its ordinances allow them to experience the weight and the joy of being on the Lord's errand, preparing them for future priesthood service, when they may be called upon to minister in unforeseeable ways—including pronouncing inspired blessings in times when hopes and dreams, and even life and death, hang in precarious balance. Such serious expectations require serious preparation."
2. "Deacons and teachers are 'to warn, expound, exhort, and teach, and invite all to come unto Christ' (Doctrine and Covenants 20:59). In addition to these opportunities, priests are to 'preach … and baptize' (Doctrine and Covenants 20:50). … One bishop taught his new deacons quorum presidency these duties. So the young presidency began to talk about what that might look like in their quorum and in their ward."
