Deep dives
Importance of Starting with the Basics: Seating, Surfaces, and Storage
Begin the décor process by focusing on essential elements such as seating, surfaces, and storage. These foundational pieces form the backbone of a room's layout and functionality. By prioritizing these aspects first, it ensures that the room is both practical and comfortable before moving on to other decorative elements.
Utilizing Everyday Items as Decor: If It Sits Out, Make It Stand Out
Embrace the idea that everyday items contribute to the overall aesthetic of a space. By selecting aesthetically pleasing items that are visible, even mundane objects can serve as décor. Transforming ordinary items into visually appealing accents enhances the overall look and feel of a room without significant costs or efforts.
Creative and Affordable Art Solutions: DIY Art and Framing
Explore cost-effective ways to introduce art into your space, such as creating DIY art pieces or repurposing existing frames. Engaging in DIY art projects allows for personalization and creativity, aligning art choices with individual preferences. Additionally, unique framing selections can elevate the presentation of artwork, offering a budget-friendly yet stylish approach to showcasing art in your home.
Interior Design Tips: The Homey Trinity Concept
When arranging your living space, consider the homey trinity concept involving rugs, drapes, and lighting. Create a cohesive look by basing your rug size on your seating placement for a precise fit. Ensure that the front feet of your main seating rest on the rug to establish a harmonious layout. Following this, incorporate drapes for both aesthetic and functional purposes, providing privacy and light control. Finally, enhance the ambiance with appropriate lighting choices to illuminate and elevate the room.
Decor Decision Sequence: Prioritizing Elements
In the decoration process, prioritize elements like wall treatment, paint color, and wall art. Start by selecting a suitable wall treatment such as paint, wallpaper, or moldings before finalizing the paint color. By sequencing the decor in this manner, you can avoid the inconvenience of repainting due to furniture mismatch. Further, strategically hang wall art after deciding on the wall treatment to maintain visual balance and appeal in the living space.
I’m so excited about today’s episode. Today we’re talking about how to decorate your home (when you’re not a professional home designer).
Decorating a home can feel challenging because there are so many different components to consider, but, like most things in life, there are some guidelines we can follow to help make things a little bit easier!
To walk us through this, I invited a Girls Night favorite back on the show and that’s my dear friend and home design enthusiast, Myquillyn Smith. Myquillyn, also known on social media as “The Nester,” believes every home has a silver lining. She's created a beautiful home in 15 different houses and she loves teaching how to create beauty in imperfect circumstances. She recently wrote a book called, House Rules: How to Decorate for Every Home, Style, and Budget. In it, she shares 100 universal decorating truths that apply to every house. One of my favorite rules that she shares is, “you can’t ruin something you already hate” — more about that in the episode!
This episode inspired me to look at my home through a new lens and I hope it does the same for you! Ready? Let’s dive in!
