Urinalysis for AKI
- For acute kidney injury, start with a urinalysis before extensive testing.
- It's a cheap, noninvasive, and informative test, sometimes called a "liquid biopsy."
Urine Specific Gravity
- Urine specific gravity can reveal hydration status and kidney function, especially in hyponatremia.
- A high value suggests dehydration or prerenal AKI, while a low value during hyponatremia treatment may predict a sodium increase.
UTI Indicators on Urinalysis
- Leucocyte esterase, white blood cells (WBCs), and nitrites on a urinalysis suggest a UTI.
- Nitrites indicate gram-negative bacteria, but a urine culture is always necessary to confirm and identify the specific organism.
