Acute Kidney Injury - Specific Gravity

The specific gravity of water is 1.0, and so when we're looking at the urine-specific gravity, we are looking at it kind of in that context. If on my differential I think that they are hypovolemic or have what we would call quote prerenal AKI, a very high specific gravity is going to be very much in support of that diagnosis. And another way to think about this is a quicker way to assess the urine osmolality as the two generally correlate pretty well. But with respect to AKI, the urine pH is not really that helpful.
