Adornment has existed for thousands of years, with humans adorning themselves and their surroundings with shells, beads, and precious stones. Adornment reflects the beauty and intricacy of the universe, where everything is adorned in some form or another. Adornment is not just about aesthetics, but also about aligning with the greater pattern of nature and creation. Every culture throughout history has had its own unique ways of adorning, whether through feathers, bone, or gold. Adornment is a way to construct consciousness, enhance perception, and establish a connection with the powers of nature.
Adornment is not just about superficial bling or materialistic display. It is about enhancing consciousness and focusing on the specific details of the adornments. In traditional animist practices, detailed adornments are considered essential for spiritual protection and guardianship. The repetition and careful crafting of adornments such as mantras, beads, and talismans create a vibrant ornamented consciousness. Adornments awaken the senses, offer defense against unwanted energies, and allow individuals to align with the patterns of nature in a profound and focused way.
Adornment plays a dual role of absorption and reflection, mirroring the two phases of vibrational energy in the universe. Adornments attract and repel, establishing boundaries and connections. They are both defensive and attractive. Adornment not only protects the individual but also allows for deeper connection and resonance with the animate world. From the elaborate garments and accessories of deities in various traditions to the personal adornments worn by practitioners, the intricate detail and intention behind the ornaments serve to architect consciousness, heighten sensory awareness, and connect with the divine.
Adornment is deeply tied to identity and culture. It reflects the values, traditions, and rituals of a community. Traditional adornments, such as those worn by the Bayana tribe in Brazil, serve as both spiritual protectants and expressions of cultural heritage. Adornment is not limited to personal attire, but extends to the ornamentation of sacred spaces and ritual objects. It is through the meticulous attention to detail and the intentional placement of specific adornments that individuals establish a sense of belonging, cohesiveness, and alignment to the larger pattern of existence.
Rituals and adornments play a vital role in human life, connecting individuals to their communities and larger cosmos. Traditional Hinduism involves 16 protective rituals that mark various life milestones. These rituals, such as birth, naming, first haircut, and marriage, bind individuals to their communities. Adornments serve as talismans, allowing us to navigate the vastness and grief of the world. Rejecting adornment or overemphasizing external adornment both limit our understanding of its significance. The journey of life involves accumulating and shedding adornments, mirroring the breath cycle of fullness and emptiness.
The relationship between inner and outer adornment is crucial. Inner adornment involves cultivating a consciousness fortified by rigorous spiritual practice. It acts as a defense against toxic discourse and external materialism. Recognizing the luminosity of what is precious and cultivating it over time forms the basis of inner adornment. Outer adornment, if not aligned with something deeper, becomes superficial. An internal recognition of inner adornment allows us to value simplicity, community, and the magic of everyday life. Talismanic magic, the ability to discern and cultivate the precious, is essential in navigating a world obsessed with superficiality and external identities.
Human beings adorn. Scientists now say that the earliest adornments date back over 160,000 years. Why is adornment so universal? It is easy to see adornment as simply an indication of status, wealth, and identity. But adornment is also more than this. The word 'adorn' and 'ornament' relate directly to the word 'order,' to the pattern of the cosmos. And so to adorn has also been associated with aligning to a greater pattern, a pattern evident in the harmonic structures of nature and expressed in the aesthetics of culture and ritual. So in many traditions, to adorn is to directly enhance and pattern consciousness. To assume the boar-tooth mask or the macaw-feather crown is to bring consciousness into greater unification with the pattern of nature — to both heighten perception and to defend against unwanted forces. So adornment plays a key role in the shamanic navigation of the cosmos. In Tantric traditions, deep, loving, attention is paid to adornments. Hymns are sung to the goddess's adornments. The entire universe itself is seen as the adornment of the primal mother power, and practices of invocation and imaginal architecting deliberately adorn the consciousness of the practitioner. Such meticulous adornment has been foundational in many animist traditions. Yet in a world of decontextualized spirituality, the architecting and adorning of consciousness through ritual patterning is often discarded in favor of spiritualities that put all the emphasis on ridding the mind of constructs rather than deliberately patterning it. Perhaps in a post-modern, post-structuralist world, modern minds need deliberate patterning. Like the Sumerian goddess Innana, we need to adorn... for survival. Featuring music from Sidibe, harpist Andy Aquarius, and Nivedita Gunturi and drawing on the work of Tantric scholar Sthaneswar Timalsina, this episode is a patterned journey through that which shines, shimmers, jingles, defends, and aligns... listen on a good sound system, at a time when you can devote your full attention.
