Failure as a Path to Success
Sir Ronald Fiennes, a renowned British explorer, discusses the importance of learning from failure. He shares his personal experiences of failure and how they have shaped his journey towards success. Fiennes emphasizes the value of perseverance and resilience, highlighting that failure is not the end but a stepping stone towards achieving one's goals. He also acknowledges the role of luck and external support in overcoming challenges. Through his stories and insights, Fiennes encourages listeners to maintain an optimistic and proactive mindset in order to overcome obstacles and accomplish great feats.
Conquering Fear and Pursuing Adventure
Fiennes talks about his lifelong fear of heights and his determination to conquer it through various adventures. He shares how he tackled his fear through exposure therapy, gradually pushing his limits, and seeking guidance from experienced climbers. Fiennes believes that fear is an inherent part of bravery and success, emphasizing the importance of living alongside fear rather than eliminating it. He recounts his failed attempts to climb Mount Everest and the valuable lessons he learned from those experiences, ultimately finding success on his third try. Fiennes' journey inspires listeners to embrace their fears, step out of their comfort zones, and pursue their passions with courage and determination.
Searching for the Lost City of Frankincense
Fiennes recounts his 21-year search for the lost city of frankincense in Oman. He shares the excitement and challenges faced during multiple expeditions to find this historically significant trading city. While initially considered a failure, the eventual discovery of the city brought celebration and fulfillment. Fiennes highlights the power of perseverance, collaboration, and the role of luck in achieving one's goals. He emphasizes the importance of staying optimistic, even in the face of setbacks, and cherishing the discoveries and valuable experiences gained along the way.
Life Lessons and Positive Outlook
Fiennes shares his life philosophy and core beliefs. He encourages listeners to appreciate their good fortune and approach life with a positive mindset. Fiennes reminds us to focus on the blessings and opportunities available, especially in contrast to the hardships that many others face around the world. He emphasizes the power of optimism, turning adversity into strength, and maintaining gratitude for the advantages and privileges that life offers. Fiennes' perspective serves as a powerful reminder to appreciate life's blessings and approach challenges with a positive and resilient attitude.
You wait years for one globally renowned adventurer to come onto How To Fail, and then two appear in the same season! First it was Bear Grylls and now it's the turn of his mentor, Sir Ranulph Fiennes. I spoil you, I really do. Sir Ranulph is one of the greatest British explorers - a man who has raised millions of pounds for charity through his exploits, which include the first north-south surface circumnavigation of the world, crossing Antarctica on foot and running seven marathons in seven days on seven continents despite suffering a heart attack and undergoing a double coronary artery bypass just four months before. He is also the oldest Briton ever to summit Mount Everest. He joins me to talk about failing to follow in his late father's footsteps by flunking the Sandurst admission, his competitive drive, the dangers of solo expeditions and - in one especially memorable passage - the time he sawed off his own frostbitten fingers (those of a squeamish disposition may want to skip that bit). And, in a particularly moving exchange, we talk about his inability to have a child with his late wife, Ginny despite several rounds of IVF and a desire to adopt. Regular listeners will know how passionate I am about bringing converstaions around fertility to the fore. It is very rare to hear men talk about it and I'm so grateful to Ranulph for opening up to me. Spoiler alert - there is a happy ending in that Ranulph now has a teenage daughter with his second wife.
