Welcome to episode 371 of Sexology Podcast! Today I am delighted to be speaking with Erika Lust. In today's episode, Erika discusses her journey and perspective on creating ethical adult films. A political science student interested in gender studies and sexuality; Erika was dissatisfied with the male-centric portrayal of women in conventional pornography. She believes ethical porn production caters to the woman's gaze, portrays relatable pleasure, and presents a broader scope of sexual experiences.
Erika Lust, an acclaimed independent erotic filmmaker, is renowned for her sex-positive adult cinema that challenges gender stereotypes and rejects harmful fetishizations. With a focus on relatable characters and realistic intimate scenes, she offers a groundbreaking alternative to mainstream porn. Over the past two decades, the Lust brand has flourished, with Erika directing six feature films and series, as well as over 130 short films and producing approximately 150 more.
In 2015, Erika delivered a compelling TEDx talk titled 'It's Time for Porn to Change', emphasizing the need for transformation within the industry. Her story was showcased in the Netflix documentary series 'Hot Girls Wanted: Turned On ("Women on Top")', directed by Rashida Jones, and 'Principles of Pleasure', directed by Niharika Desai. Recognized for her influence, Erika was named one of the BBC 100 Women's most influential women of the year in 2019. Her alternative approach to pornography gained further recognition in 2022, as it was featured in The New York Times and the BBC Three & HULU series 'Planet Sex with Cara Delevingne'.
