Deep dives
Xi Jinping's Ambitious Vision for China's Future
Xi Jinping's political thought revolves around the ambitious vision of achieving the China dream of national rejuvenation by 2049 or 2050 at the latest. Internally, Xi aims to unify the country under one ideology, party, and leader, striving for a modern, innovative, and influential China. Externally, China aspires to be a global leader admired and respected worldwide. Xi's vision contrasts with his predecessors' approaches, focusing on unique sinocentric Marxism.
Xi Jinping's Control and Ideological Shifts
Xi Jinping's approach to governance emphasizes centralized control through the Communist Party, making individuals conform to his ideology. Unlike Mao Zedong's Marxist-Leninist approach, Xi's 'Xi Jinping Thought' combines Marxism with a sinocentric perspective, neglecting Leninist elements. This ideological shift aims to align Chinese civilization and tradition with communism, emphasizing loyalty and conformity to the party's leadership.
Global Influence and China's Role Amidst International Dynamics
Xi Jinping's foreign policy agenda strives for China's preeminence in reshaping international order. Rejecting traditional roles like those of the US, China envisions a Sinocentric global order where China's leadership is paramount. While seeking support from the global South, China's ambitions prioritize non-interference and China-centric cooperation over traditional interventions. Xi's approach, rooted in 'Tianxia,' focuses on global leadership without a hegemonic policing role.
In this episode of the ChinaPower Podcast, Dr. Steve Tsang joins us to discuss his new book The Political Thought of Xi Jinping, coauthored with Dr. Olivia Cheung. Dr. Tsang explains that Xi Jinping thought is vastly different from the thought and practices of his predecessors, such as Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping. Core to Xi Jinping thought is the desire to achieve China’s national rejuvenation and the embracement of the “Tian Xia” concept of Chinese hegemony. Dr. Tsang points out that Xi seeks to position China in a more prominent role on the world stage. Dr. Tsang highlights that through Xi’s efforts to centralize the Communist Party under his control and to create an alternative to the US-led international order, Xi aims to reshape policy both within China and abroad. Finally, Dr. Tsang shares his thoughts on how best to deter Xi Jinping.
