The TGA is cracking down on advertising of cosmetic injections in Australia, aiming to limit misleading practices and improve patient autonomy and safety.
The rapid growth of the cosmetic industry, driven by social media, poses challenges in balancing customer information, safety, and responsible advertising practices.
Deep dives
Accidentally comparing a wedding video to a funeral
During a work lunch, the narrator overhears solemn music and profound speeches coming from a video being watched by colleagues. Without thinking, the narrator yells over, asking if they are watching a live stream funeral. Embarrassingly, it turns out it was the ex-boyfriend's wife's wedding video. The colleagues were unaware of the history between them, making the situation even more awkward.
Cracking down on cosmetic injectables advertising
The TGA is introducing stricter regulations on advertising cosmetic injectables in Australia. This crackdown prohibits the use of words like 'wrinkle injections' and 'facial fillers' in advertisements. Some argue that this will limit patient information and decision-making, while others believe it will help curb misleading advertising practices. The discussion also reflects on the importance of practitioner education and patient autonomy when it comes to cosmetic procedures.
The rapid growth of the cosmetic industry
The cosmetic industry has made significant progress in the past five years, largely due to social media. It is now more accessible and openly discussed. However, this rapid growth has created challenges in terms of advertising regulations and patient education. It is important to strike a balance between customer information, safety, and responsible advertising practices.
Navigating the emotions of a three-year-old's birthday
The narrator celebrates their child's third birthday and reflects on how fast time has flown. They marvel at their child's development and consider it a highlight. However, the bittersweet feeling of their child growing up quickly also serves as a reminder of the passage of time and the narrator's role as a parent.
Britt is on her home run of recording from Scotland. We chat about navigating long distance & how it's going to work for her in 2024. Laura is... propagating. Lots of propagating. She might be a lost cause at this point but at least the house will be filled with fresh oxygen!
We speak about a man who is suing people who outed him on a facebook group as being bad to date. Sounds a lot like someone who wouldn't be great to date to be honest...
We also unpack the new crackdown that the TGA is having on the advertising of cosmetic injections. While existing rules banned Botox ads, that didn’t stop clinics from scooting around them by using 'code words' like “anti-wrinkle treatment” and “lip filler”. But not anymore! Essentially there's no longer going to be any advertising of these types of services. We raise the question of 'is this going to reduce or increase patient education about the procedures that they may wish to have?' Is the TGA putting energy into scrutinising the right thing?
